Longer Visit Than Planned!
We arrived shortly before NOON. As we were preparing to leave the phone rang one
more time . . . . and we could not resist answering. The next call was the highlight
of our day.
It was someone calling for Oscar winning actress/singer Cher. We were skeptical and asked to speak to Cher directly. He was heard calling out for her and Cher came on the other line.
Her voice was unmistakable. We both spoke to her for about 10 minutes. We hope to hear from her again to confirm the call, perhaps with an email or autographed photograph!
Cher said she had read about the booth in a magazine and called the previous evening. She called "on a lark", like most people do, half expecting no one to answer. To her surprise, she told us, someone answered. There was a cocktail party taking place at the Mojave Phone Booth. When we took her call, she had called for a second time to see if anyone else was there.
We took about 50 calls that afternoon from all over the world. Calls came from New Zealand, Slovakia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, England, and all over the United States. We even took a call from a producer at CBS News. A log listing most of the calls we took can be viewed by clicking the Logs link to the left.
Shortly after Cher's call, another truck drove up. It was a white truck with U. S. Government plates. We thought maybe we were in trouble, but were glad to learn it was two Park employees, Tony and Kelly, who just stopped by to see what was going on.
There was ample evidence others had visited the Cinder Peak Phone. We documented some of it to show you.

Shortly thereafter, a truck came down the same road we traveled. It was Victor, a photographer from Carlsbad, CA. Some of his terrific photos are on this site.) arrived. As Tony and Kelly prepared to leave, another car drove up, with Gretchen (San Francisco) and Jason (Las Vegas). That's Jason seen to the right of Tony's truck, below.
